Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF)’s Packaging Council of Singapore (PCS) organised a Packaging Conference 2018 on 26 July 2018.
27 July 2018 - Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF)’s Packaging Council of Singapore (PCS) organised a Packaging Conference 2018 on 26 July 2018. Themed “The Future of Packaging – Packaging diverse materials and application”, the conference highlighted the key challenges faced in the packaging industry and how the industry can innovate and adapt to changing currents.
More than 200 participants attended the conference to hear from the industry experts share their views and thoughts on how they can innovate in their packaging structure and trends in packaging materials. With increasingly creative packaging designs and heightened awareness of ‘eco’ issues such as global warming and pollution, companies are challenged to think beyond the box to cater to the trends whilst maintaining quality, safety, shelf life as well as cost efficiencies. In line with the government initiatives to reduce waste, recyclable materials can now be used to reduce packaging waste without compromising on quality.
One of the speaker for the conference, Dr. Nelson Cheng from Magna International Pte Ltd shared his patent to use mineral stones as an alternative material to make paper. “By using mineral stones, documents last longer as it will not attract insects. We also save the trees from getting cut down just to make paper.” He said. “4 billion trees are cut down to make paper. Of which, 35% are used for packaging. That’s about 1.4 billion trees for packaging alone. Therefore, I see that sustainability and environment friendliness is the way to go for packaging. “
Dr. Nelson Cheng of Magna International Pte Ltd shared his patent of using mineral stones as an alternative material to produce paper.
The Chairman of PCS, Ms. Betty Tan shared that in PCS, they “encourage members to use materials that are sustainable and environmentally friendly in their manufacturing processes. This is why this conference is organised so that members can learn and be encouraged to use recyclable materials for packaging.”
PCS Chairman, Ms. Betty Tan shared about the Singapore Packaging Awards 2018.
PCS was formed in 1975 as a sub-committee of SMF and became a national industry group in 1986. Since then, PCS has organised multiple seminars and conferences to drive innovation in the packaging industry and promote a constant exchange of knowledge and experience. PCS also recognises innovative packaging designs through its Packaging Star Awards. The upcoming Packaging Star Awards Ceremony will be awarding 22 companies and students in recognition of their innovation and sustainability.
