SMF awards certification to Precision Engineering Master Craftsmen

Singapore Manufacturing Federation administered the Precision Engineering Master Craftsmen (PeMC) Certification to 12 highly skilled professionals on 19 May 2014.

Singapore Manufacturing Federation administered the Precision Engineering Master Craftsmen (PeMC) Certification to 12 highly skilled professionals on 19 May 2014. These individuals were among the pioneer batch of 51 graduates in the PeMC programme offered at Nanyang Polytechnic.

The PeMC programme is a two-year part-time course that aims to boost the Singapore precision engineering industry through upgrading the workers’ skills and raising productivity. Graduates of this programme are eligible to apply for the industry certification developed by SMF and the Singapore Precision Engineering and Tooling Association (SPETA). With the certification, graduates will be recognised as Master Craftsmen in the industry.

The graduation ceremony was held at Nanyang Polytechnic. Mr S Iswaran, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry, graced the event. Prior to the commencement of the ceremony, the Minister also visited the precision engineering facilities in Nanyang Polytechnic.

Mr S. Iswaran, Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry, appreciating some of the works produced by the precision engineering students

“Today, precision engineering companies are already shifting their emphasis from the mass-production of simple parts to the manufacture of technology-intensive precision components.  They are also increasingly involved in the design, development and manufacture of high-mix, low-volume complex equipment. With such trends, our training institutions and companies must invest in updating and developing capabilities to remain relevant in the future,” said Minister S. Iswaran.

The PeMC Certification Board had received a total of 15 applications for the Master Craftsmen Certification. Dr Ahmad Magad, Chairman of the PeMC Certification Board, presented the 12 successful applicants their certificates during the ceremony.

“The applicants are experienced and seasoned professionals in the industry, many of whom have more than 15 years of working experience.  The Master Craftsman Certificate serves as a validation of their professionalism and contributions. Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) is honoured to be able to help these professionals advance even further in their careers with the PeMC,” shared Dr Ahmad Magad.

The Minister engaged in conversation with Dr Ahmad Magad, Vice President of SMF and Chairman of the PeMC Certification Board, and Dr Moh Chong Tau, Honorary Secretary of SMF and Chairman of the PeMC Focus Group

“I took this opportunity to upgrade myself and also to keep myself updated on the trends of the manufacturing industry. The PeMC Certificate is a recognised national certificate that is an endorsement of my skills and ability. In precision engineering, there is more focus on hands-on experience rather than theory. Hence, this certification is a way for the more experienced workers to gain recognition. I am very happy to have obtained the Master Craftsman Certificate,” enthused Mr Zulkefli Bin Ismail, one of the graduates who has received the PeMC Certificate. Mr Zulkefli has 18 years of experience since entering the industry in 1996. He currently works as a Tooling Manager at Armstrong Rubber Manufacturing.

“My General Manager nominated me to attend the PeMC course at Nanyang Polytechnic. I was also very eager to learn and adopt new concepts and new technologies. The course provides an update to the current standard practices. The PeMC Certificate gives recognition to graduates who have upgraded with new skillset and knowledge of new technologies. This is useful in raising the productivity within our company as well as developing my career path,” said Mr Sundaramurathy Dandapani, Design Engineer at Omni Mold Ltd (Singapore).
