25 November 2016 - More than 80 members of SMF and the Singapore infocomm Technology Federation (SiTF) gathered for a talk on “Cyber Threats and The Impact on Businesses". The aim of this jointly-organised session was to share technology insights, trends and best practices among business leaders and practitioners.

Mr Lam Joon Khoi, Secretary-General of SMF opened the session by addressing the pervasiveness of  cyber threats and the need for awareness in ensuring healthy practices to minimise risks. He added that productivity would be impacted should a business’ data be compromised by a cyber-attack.

An invited panel of technology experts presented various topics to provide a varied yet relevant perspective on IT security. The invited speakers were:

  • Mr Ryan Flores, Forward-Threat Research Senior Manager, Trend Micro Singapore
    He shared how Singapore faces a greater risk of cyber-attacks with an increasingly inter-connected world.
  • Mr Stephen Tan, Regional Sales Manager of Palo Alto Networks
    He provided a case study about ransomware. One of the latest known cyber threat, ransomware encrypts the user’s data and demands a ransom to de-encrypt the data.
  • Mr John Lockhart, Business Developer, Dell EMC
    He presented case studies on the use of the Internet of Things (IOT) to harness productivity in the manufacturing sector.
  • Mr Rizwi Wun, Partner, IP & Technology, RHTLaw Taylor Wessing
    He cautioned companies that are confronted with cyber-attacks to be mindful of their response to their customers and partners as this would have implications on the company’s branding.


Ms Sarah Bai, Program Executive of Fuji Xerox’s Innovation Office said, “I’m glad that I participated in this seminar as much of what the speakers shared was useful for me to understand the trends and needs to formulate products that would be relevant for the market.”
