SMF President Mr. Lennon Tan led a delegation to meet with the Minister of Trade and Industry of the Philippines, Mr. Alfredo "Fred" Pascual for a coffee chat on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024. Accompanying President were Vice Presidents Mr. Melvin Tan and Ms. Audrey Yap and IG Chairmen Mr. Benjamin Lim and Mr. Henry Tan.

During the coffee chat, Minister Pascual emphasized the Philippines' dedication to fostering a conducive business environment, promoting open trade, engaging deeply with the ASEAN community, and strengthening the robust ties between Singapore and the Philippines.

The discussions also highlighted the expanding opportunities for Singaporean businesses in the Philippines. Key projects in the development of Clarke were discussed, including the construction of an airport, a food zone to enhance food resilience, and various infrastructure projects to improve connectivity between Clarke and other parts of the Philippines. In addition to Clarke, the Minister pointed out potential business ventures in Subic, Davao, Cebu, and other regions of the country.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗼 𝗘. 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗮𝗹
Mr. Alfredo E. Pascual is the Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). At the time of his appointment in June 2022, he was President of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP).

Over the past four decades, he has contributed to society, serving four national and international institutions, viz.: President and CEO of the Institute of Corporate Directors in 2018 and 2019; President and Co-Chair of the University of the Philippines System from 2011 to 2017 and Alumni Regent in 2009 and 2010; in various positions at the Asian Development Bank from 1989 to 2008; and the Asian Institute of Management as a finance professor in the 1980s.

He was an independent director on the board of several publicly listed companies. His previous board memberships included non-profits and other organizations such as the Philippine Institute for Development Studies, International Rice Research Institute, Institute for Solidarity in Asia, FINEX Academy, UP Foundation, and the Philippine Council for Foreign Relations among others. Mr. Pascual finished his MBA and BS in Chemistry (cum laude) at the University of the Philippines and attended the EC ASEAN Program on Strategic and Organizational Change at the Euro-Asia Centre in France.

His awards included Honorary Doctorates from UP and four other universities, Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award, and Rotary Golden Wheel Award for Higher Education.
