Prior to his appointment as Singapore Ambassador Designate to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Mr Jaya Ratnam served in various capacities both in Singapore and abroad, including roles in the Permanent Mission in Geneva, the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta and Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. Mr Ratnam has been in the Foreign Service since 1991 and previously served as Singapore’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium from July 2016 to December 2020. Prior to that, from June 2012 to March 2016, he was Singapore’s High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.

Mr Jaya Ratnam addressed a number of initiatives in both Vietnam and Singapore that have stimulated greater collaboration across a wide range of sectors over the years. He also expressed the intention of the visit to discuss how Vietnam and the SMF could work together to promote trade and investment opportunities and leverage on Singapore’s extensive Free Trade Agreements to build bridges between Singapore and Vietnam companies.
Mr Foo mentioned that the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), negotiated between the European Union and Vietnam to boost trade and investment between the two regions, is an important economic milestone for Vietnam, which also provides new opportunities for ASEAN. He also stated that the EVFTA marks a new chapter in relations between Vietnam and the EU and, together with the EU-Singapore FTA (EUSFTA), paves the way for more trade agreements with other ASEAN members and the EU, or even an ASEAN EU multilateral FTA.
He further pointed out that the Enterprise Europe Network Singapore (EEN Singapore) formed by the SMF, ESG and Intellectual Property Intermediary (IPI) Singapore is able to get SMF members to work with Vietnam companies to promote and support business, technology and research and development partnerships in Europe.
