Industrial Transformation ASIA-PACIFIC (ITAP), a HANNOVER MESSE event is back in Singapore after a highly successful inaugural showing in 2018. ITAP continues to be Asia-Pacific’s leading trade event for Industry 4.0, the event brings together an ecosystem of manufacturers, government agencies & businesses ranging from multinational corporations (MNC) to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to shape and support their transformation initiatives. This year the Singapore Manufacturing Federation is pleased to partner with the Singapore Precision Engineering & Technology Association (SPETA) to organise the Singapore Pavilion at ITAP 2019.
The three day event was held at the Singapore EXPO from 22 to 24 October 2019. ITAP 2019 kicked off with an opening ceremony officiated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat. In his opening address he notes, "Here in Singapore, we are transforming our economy, including the manufacturing sectors, through our Industry Transformation Maps. Research and innovation in advanced manufacturing is also a key emphasis of our Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2020 (RIE2020) plan. At the same time, global supply chains are evolving, manufacturers are increasingly seeking to diversify their production base. They also see benefits in producing near to market, as consumption in the region grows. Hence, despite the near-term global economic uncertainty, the future for manufacturing in this region remains promising."
Mr Heng continues to highlight the opportunities for manufacturing in ASEAN, "Southeast Asia is well-positioned to be a regional manufacturing powerhouse, and the home for factories of the future. However, for ASEAN to realise this potential, we must work together to attract companies to this region and build regional capabilities. While countries have borders, companies do not, many manufacturers have activities across countries in the region. These activities are deeply inter-connected and their supply-chains are highly integrated. One way to attract higher value activities in ASEAN is to better integrate our systems, particularly data and information. Open data use is one of the strategic objectives of the ASEAN Connectivity 2025 initiative. If data and information can flow more freely between manufacturers in the region, it can help companies better connect the dots, and link up their production and operations. This will have a multiplier effect on value chains and economies in the region."
This year 35 local companies showcased their innovative products in their respective booths. 21 of these companies were members of the SMF and it was a great sight to see the varying expertise in robotics, automation, 3d printing, and numerous other solutions on display.
Day Two of ITAP also saw the opening of the Global Additive Manufacturing Summit. During the summit, Singapore Standards Council (SSC) launched TR 70, overseen by Enterprise Singapore, this is a new technical reference (TR 70) called “Guidelines on selection criteria for metal additive manufacturing processes”. The development of TR 70 was led by representatives from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), the Singapore Armed Forces, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC), the additive manufacturing industry, and the Singapore Manufacturing Federation – Standards Development Organisation (SMF-SDO). It is the first of four TRs that will be progressively launched by end 2020, to provide critical requirements and guidelines for the use of additive manufacturing in military and non-military applications in Singapore.
During the event, the SMF Secretary-General Dr Ahmad Magad signed an MOU with iSAMS (iSMART Advanced Manufacturing Solutions) consortium, founded by iPlast 4.0 Pte Ltd, SMT Technology Pte Ltd and Nanyang Polytechnic, which was officially launched this year at ITAP 2019, as one of the supporting organisations.
The SMF-SDO had the opportunity to introduce the standards developed for service and industry robots to SMS Dr Koh Poh Koon. Weston Robots, a member of the SMF had the opportunity to introduce their products to SMS Dr Koh.
